$5000 in scholarships

Come and compete in Blizzard’s Heroes of the Storm against other South Texas High Schools for your chance to win a scholarship! Get a team of 5 and start practicing now.

On Saturday, March 23, 2019 at 11AM, the Group Stage of the tournament will begin. Bracket A on the first week, Bracket B on the second week, and so on. Contestants will play for Best of Three in each match up. Winners will progress through the brackets and losers will drop into the Second Chance bracket. Two finalists will come out of each Group, one from the main bracket and one from the Second Chance bracket.

The finalists from the Group Stage will compete in the Quarterfinals on May 11, until there are 4 finalists.

The Championship match will be held on May 18 and will be played as a Best of Five. The winning team will split the scholarship money!

Every team is guaranteed to play at least 4 games. In a Best of Three style match, you have to play and lose twice in order to lose that match up. You will then go to the Second Chance bracket. In the next match up, it will also be Best of Three, so you have to play and lose twice before you are completely out of the tournament.

Games are broadcast live for all to see and will be made available for review by the next day.

What is Heroes of the Storm?

Heroes of the Storm, or HotS, is a free-to-play game developed by Blizzard. You don’t need a credit card to sign up and you don’t even need a great computer. The game runs on a Mac or a PC. If your computer is from this decade, and not loaded down with malware, chances are you can start playing right now. Check your system against the requirements here.

If you know about League of Legends or DotA 2, then you will instantly be familiar with HotS. Teams of 5 pick from a roster of nearly 90 characters from Blizzard lore with new ones added every few weeks. You can play as Nova with Deckard Cain on your team against Jim Raynor and Tracer. If you don’t know any of those names, it doesn’t matter because everything you need to know is built right in to the game. When the game starts off you do your best to eliminate the enemy core while protecting your own from the enemy team trying their best to take yours down. Matches typically take about 20 minutes or so to complete.

Choose your characters wisely to make the best team and then customize your character with various skills as you level up during battle. You can be a heavy front line tank, a fragile but formidable mage, change the course of battles as a healer, or focus on destroying buildings as a specialist.

Everyone has a job to do and a role to play.

FAQ

"Do I need a whole team?"

Your school needs a whole team in order to compete. If you sign up and a 5 person roster isn’t filled, your school will forfeit and your registration fee will be refunded.

"Can girls play?"

Yes. This is open to all high school students in Region 2. Unlike physical sports in the UIL, e-sports are truly co-ed.

"What if I have a full team but I can’t make it to one particular game?"

A 5 person team is needed to play a match. If you signed up and filled out a 5 person roster but you can’t make it to a specific game, you have three options. Your team can forfeit the match and you can take your chances on the Second Chance bracket, you can request an AI bot to fill in, or you can find an alternate to play for you. To have an alternate play for you, they must also attend your school and the alternate is not allowed to play in championship matches.

"Is Malganis broken, and does he ruin the entire game by disrupting everything and surviving way longer than any character should and just ignoring damage and escaping only to turn around keep winning team fights?"

Yes.

"How will the matches be fair? I don't want to get skunked by a pro team."

There are no professional teams here, only High School students. Some schools will be better than others just like in any competition.

If you feel another school is cheating, email me with any proof you have. Teams that break the rules will be eliminated from the tournament as taking losses.
